Domaine de Lucena is located in the southern Rhone valley, a couple hours from the Maconnais in Burgundy. Our connection to the Domaine starts with a lucky encounter between Paul and Lucie, the newly appointed winemaker and daughter of the owners Nathalie and Laurent.

As Paul recounts, “We met in 2013 while studying at the French wine university, Suze la Rousse, in the south of France. Lucie and I studied wine marketing for a year together in a small class where we all became friends. She was the first student who invited the class to her winery for a wine tasting. I really liked her parents’ wine at the time, and we have visited each other often since then.”

Domaine de Lucena was founded in the ‘60s when Lucie’s grandparents bought farmland in the village Visan, in Vaucluse. The winery was given the name “Lucena” by her parents for their children: Lucie, Cedric and Nathan. Vaucluse has been recognized for its wine production since 1582 when the popes of Avignon first farmed grapes on the same southern facing, hilly terrain near Mont Ventoux – the same land that Domaine de Lucena works today. The clay-limestone soil mixed with flat gallet rond stones is typical of the region. These soils are perfect for growing Grenache Noir and Blanc, Syrah, Vieux Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault.

Lucie wants to bring a new touch to the family estate and take advantage of new opportunities beyond traditional borders. We’re proud to support her by bringing her wine to California.
